Weekly Update 9.24.19

By In News & Updates On September 24, 2019

Hang with me guys…this is a long one!

Tuesday Folders are coming home today and contain school paperwork, student work samples, and interim reports.

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Monday, September 30th is a Teacher Workday. Enjoy a 3 day weekend!
  • THANK YOU to any who placed a Scholastic book order! We earned over $100 in books for our classroom! The kids were SO excited to see our new reads and were each given a chance to pick out what they would like to see come into our classroom.
  • 3rd grade students took the Beginning of Grade (BOG) assessment recently. This is a reading test which shows what students already know, sets a benchmark to measure growth against this year, and serves as a Read to Achieve exemption if students score high enough. It does not go on the report card. Scores on this assessment are coming home today. I will go over these results, and all of our beginning of the year results at 1st quarter conferences in October, but if you have questions before then please let me know.
  • Mark your calendar and please plan to attend 3rd grade’s Curriculum Night on Tuesday, October 8th at 6:00 in our media center.  It should last 30-45 minutes. This session is for parents only. This will be a chance for you to hear about 3rd grade testing and expectations and interact with our curriculum.
  • School Picture Day will be Wed, Oct 2nd. Info to come in folders
  • Field trip details and payment information came home 2 weeks ago. Please take your time and read carefully. Make sure all necessary forms are completely filled out.  The online school payment (OSP) system is HIGHLY encouraged so large amounts of money is not in the hands of children and I am not using instructional time to receipt money. This option will open on Sept 24th-TODAY! All paperwork should be returned by Sept 30th. We are accepting unlimited chaperones for our 1st trip to the Science Museum on October 30th, however you must be a registered WCPSS volunteer which you can do in person at the Oakview office. If you are interested in chaperoning a student group, please dojo Mrs. Vaughan and let her know. You will need to pay the $10 entrance fee at the museum that day. word-field trip
  • Mark your calendars and please make plans to attend our student Food Truck Rodeo on Friday, October 18th! A lot more exciting info will come home next week but this great project includes entrepreneurship, creativity, buying and selling, trophies, fake food trucks AND real ones! Please block off a few hours of your late morning/early afternoon to join in the learning and lunch!
  • Fall parent teacher conferences will take place mid-late October. Sign up for these here! At these conferences we will take a personalized look at your child’s performance and any assessment results. For most of you, this will be a good time because it’s just prior to 1st quarter report cards. If you feel you require a conference prior to this date, please dojo or email me your concerns and what meeting times could work for you.

This week in Literacy:

  • Students are finishing literacy assessments this week in the areas of fluency, comprehension and context clues. These will help give us an idea of what students know and give us a baseline on how far students will grow this year.
  • We are also learning about characters- their traits and motivation, and how their actions impact the story. Students will practice telling basic story elements and answering right there questions.
  • In writing, we are having a great time writing a personal narrative about an injury we have had. The more details, the better the story! Our stories will be told in a Diary of a Wimpy Kid format using band-aids as the illustrations to show our story:)

This week in Math:

This week we are working with a short unit on using data to solve problems. Student learning outcomes are as follows:

  1. Data can be collected using a frequency table. (NC.3.MD.3)
  2. Data can be organized by creating scaled bar graphs and scaled picture graphs. (NC.3.MD.3)
  3. Data in graphs can be used to answer questions and compare categories.  (NC.3.MD.3)

This quarter in social studies: In 1st quarter, students will learn about Economics and Financial Literacy. This units builds on 2nd grade knowledge and students will tie their learning into the Food Truck Business writing project.

Objectives for this quarter are:

3.E.1 Understand how the location of regions affects activity in a market economy.
