Be on the Lookout for…
- Folders will come home today with lots of student work samples. Students self selected 3 pieces that they are excited to share with you! Please review as able.
- Homework tonight requires students to do 2 math problems in their agenda. It’s the same equation but one is addition and one is subtraction. Please use the number line strategy to solve these. We practiced several times today, and this was introduced in 2nd grade, but I am attaching a video in case you would like to see an example.
- Upcoming teacher workdays are Mon, Oct 20th (Food Drive day- details linked), Tues Nov 4th (Happy Election Day) and Tue, Nov 11th (Happy Veterans Day). There is no school for students on those days.
- Our school Fall Festival is coming up on Fri, Nov 7th at 5pm! Thank you Mrs. Rhyner for making it easy to get involved and help make this fun event a huge success. Please click to sign up for an item or two for our class raffle basket!
- As you may know, this next month is National Hispanic Heritage Month. Students are already reading books from countries around the world and we will dive deeper into different cultures and persons of interest. We always have an end of quarter reading celebration and I’d like to bring some fiesta vibes to it! If you are willing to contribute an item to make this a reality, I would really appreciate it. Please visit this Amazon link . Please send these in by Mon, Oct 27th. Thank you!
- 1st quarter report cards come home Friday, November 7th. I will hold fall parent teacher conferences for the few weeks prior to that. You can choose virtual or in person. Please sign up for those conferences here. word-conferencetime
This week in Literacy:
Students will begin developing goals for their own Overcoming Challenges paragraph. We will read “More Than Anything” to see yet another example of people overcoming learning challenges and the importance of books and literacy in children’s lives.
Thank you for ensuring your child reads at LEAST 10 minutes a day at home. You can write their minutes at the bottom of agendas next to the day of the week.
This week in Math:
- We are working in Unit 3, which is stories with Addition and Subtraction. This unit always proves to be tricky for students. Please view the parent guide to help you assist your child and understand the various addition and subtraction lingo. There are some cheat sheets in agendas. Please keep those in agendas so they can be used at school and at home during unit 3 which focuses on a variety of addition and subtraction of methods. We do teach regrouping as a strategy this year (yay, finally the way you learned growing up), but it is alongside the methods they have been taught previously to ensure core understanding. Some of these may NOT be familiar to you as parents so it is VERY important to use the example coming home from what students did that day. Some very helpful parent links to what we are doing can be found here: Place Value Addition Show All Totals/Partial Sums Addition on a # Line Place Value Subtraction Subtraction on a Number Line
This quarter in Science: We are studying the States of Matter and how states can change from one to another.
