Weekly Update 8.30.20
By carrievaughan In News & Updates On August 30, 2020
Alright parents, this is a long one. It’s also a very important one. Please settle in and feel free to bookmark this link for the next few weeks. It WILL get easier. I would just rather you had MORE information than LESS…
Welcome to week 3 of 3rd grade. This week starts to focus on academic skills and grading will begin. Please view and PRINT the finalized schedule for the remainder of remote learning. There are up to seven different times your child may be getting on a meet daily so printing this out would be wildly beneficial. I have rearranged groups for the next few weeks so please see below so your child knows which schedule to adhere to.
Groups going forward are:
1- Christian, Claire, Emmett, Rocco, Chantel
2- Berkley, Collins, Cara, Madeline, Owen
3- Kylie, Victor, Charlotte, Mert, KayKay
4- Bennett, Cody, Tyler, Emerson, Andrea
Students will NOT have regular small group meets on Fridays. These times will be reserved for longer assessments called “Show Me What You Know” time, tutoring or reteaching, technical assistance, or catch up time for students who still have asynchronous work to complete. If your child is being requested to attend a Google Meet during small group time I will message you Friday morning or you may message me if you think your child needs that extra support that week.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED- It will be important for your child to have certain supplies handy for school going forward. You may choose to keep them in a large crate or in a backpack near their work area. Some supplies will change (books we read for example) while others are good to keep nearby always. In addition to their device and possibly headphones/headset, your child should have:
- Printed math lessons placed in a 3-ring binder (you should have received a packet at distribution)
- Book of the week- will change as we complete stories. THIS WEEK they will need their TEXT COLLECTION
- MATH composition or spiral notebook
- READING/WRITING composition or spiral notebook
- SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES composition or spiral notebook
- Folder for holding the 2 pages of our printed schedule and any other papers you print as a resource
- White board and marker(received at distribution) with something for erasing
- Pencils
- Colored pencils OR markers
- A free choice reading book or two
You should have received an email invite to be a guardian of your child’s Google Classroom account. This will allow you to check assignments and work completion. It is always better to turn things in late than not at all. Your monitoring of the account is encouraged. If you did not receive this email and would like to be added as a guardian, please message Mrs. Vaughan with the email address you’d like to use.
YOUR CHILD’S WORK LOAD THIS WEEK:
- All work will be accessible through Google Classroom. When finished they must TURN IN for it to disappear from their to do list.
- Students should be 5 minutes early for morning meeting (9:10) and whole group reading (12:55). They should be ON TIME for any small group to they don’t interrupt an active meeting.
ASYNCHRONOUS WORK: When your child is not meeting live with the teacher, they will be expected to complete independent tasks daily or weekly. This may vary slightly from teacher to teacher, but our class will have the following expectations:
- MATH asynchronous work will be done daily but turned in on Friday. They may complete several tasks in the same day if they choose, but cannot turn in until after the Friday “Show Me What You Know” quiz or activity has been activated and completed. Here is an example of the document students will use to track their task completion throughout the week.
- READING/WRITING asynchronous work will be a mix of daily and twice a week assignments. Students are expected to read DAILY for 20 minutes in addition to the required reading of our class reading focus text. They may read physical books or one of the many digital reading resources available to them. These minutes will be tracked in their Google Classroom post. Here is an example of what they will use to access and track their reading minutes.
- SCIENCE/SOCIAL studies lessons will be a mix or live meets and asynchronous work. If students are NOT live they are expected to turn in assignments THAT DAY.
Please ask your child about their EPIC and Xtramath accounts. Students learned how to use these tools last week through the Technology Quest and you can now track their progress and celebrate their growth with them at home.
If your child has not completed their Technology Quest from last week, it is very important they finish it soon. Knowing where these tools are and how to use them will make completing academic tasks so much easier!
Next week begins Specials from 11-11:25. Those teachers have added students to their classrooms; they just have to accept the invite.
If your child was not added to one of the specialists Google Classrooms here’s what you do:
1) Go to your Google Classrooms
2) Click the plus in right corner to add a class
3) enter the class code to join!
Here are the codes for each special:

Thanks for sticking with me through the long list of updates. I feel confident it will be easier going forward with a SET schedule and increased comfort with log ins and tech tools.
