Be on the Lookout for…
- Tomorrow, Wed March 3rd is an ASYNCHRONOUS day for students. Please have them check their Google Classroom for expectations or work to complete assignment prior to 4pm. Students must interact with assignments prior to 2pm to be counted present that day.
- We will be wrapping up our NC history unit this week with a “Taste of NC” this Friday the 5th. If you would be willing to contribute food please click this sign up link. Thanks so much! If you do NOT want your child eating or drinking samples of these items, please message me.
- On March 24th (a future asynchronous day), students will take the NCCheckIns for math. This was rescheduled due to inclement weather last week. This is not part of their grade but does give good data on how your child is doing on math standards covered since the beginning of this school year. These will be done online so all children will need to bring their device to school with them.
- Please make sure your child has returned all their learning materials to school. This includes ANY books, notebooks, their art supplies/pencil pouch, etc. The whiteboard/marker can remain at home for asynchronous days. They should also bring a their device, a DAILY snack, refillable water bottle, and a spare mask (in case the first gets wet, dirty, lost).
This week in Literacy:
Students are starting a nonfiction unit with the fascinating and exciting text, Living Through a Natural Disaster. It features true stories of Cyclone Tracy, Huang He River flooding, and El Nino. Personal accounts, amazing photos, diagrams, and complex text make this been really “eye” opening 🙂 They are also turning their new knowledge of these news events into a mock-news report using a Green Screen. More details on that to come. You are going to be amazed what your child can do!
Students have 2 new reading incentives today in their agendas. Please be on the lookout for these items:
1) Reading passport- Students have until March 26th to “Read Across America”. Each 20 minutes of reading equals a new state stamped by me in class on their passport. If they reach the goal of 1000 minutes by the deadline, they will be invited to an afterschool Luau to celebrate their reading stamina! All YOU have to do parents is acknowledge the reading titles and minutes each night at the bottom of agendas. Students are of course encouraged to read over weekends too:)
2) Dr Seuss Reading Bingo- students can earn a prize sheet as a reward for completing 15 of these activities over the course of the month. These can be used simultaneously as they earn reading minutes!
Thank you for supporting your child as we push them to be voracious readers with improved reading stamina! word-HawaiiOrBust
This week in Math:
Students are continuing a lengthy, but exciting Fractions unit. Lots of vocab is important in understanding this concept. Here is a parent guide for helping you and your student understand our main learning outcomes

TIMED MULTIPLICATION QUIZZES: will continue this week with 3’s. We have previously done 1’s and 2’s. Students will prepare for this by practicing throughout the week using activities from their math board. MAKEUP QUIZZES WILL BE TUESDAYS!!
