By In News & Updates On March 16, 2021

Be on the Lookout for…

  • There is no asynchronous day this week. Students are in person Mon-Fri!
  • This week is Rah Rah for Reading week. Please see image for opportunities to dress up!
  • Students are encouraged to wear green on Wednesday for St. Patricks Day:)
  • Scholastic Book Orders went home in folders yesterday. These are due by Thursday at 4pm so the order can be placed and received before Spring Break! To order, visit scholastic.com/bookclubs Our Class code is: GPPF6
  • Next week on March 24th (a future asynchronous day), students will take the NCCheckIns for math. This was rescheduled due to inclement weather last week. Make sure your child’s device has the appropriate program downloaded on it.

This week in Literacy:

Students are continuing a nonfiction unit with the fascinating text, Night Of the Grizzlies written by well loved “I Survived” author Lauren Tarshis. This is another true tale of a disaster that humans learned from. We are also finishing Living Through a Natural Disaster. It features true stories of Cyclone Tracy, Huang He River flooding, and El Nino. Personal accounts, amazing photos, diagrams, and complex text make this been really “eye” opening 🙂 They are also turning their new knowledge of these news events into a mock-news report using a Green Screen.

Students have 2 reading incentives this month. Please be on the lookout for these items:
1) Reading passport- Students have until March 26th to “Read Across America”. Each 20 minutes of reading equals a new state stamped by me in class on their passport. If they reach the goal of 1000 minutes by the deadline, they will be invited to an afterschool Luau to celebrate their reading stamina! All YOU have to do parents is acknowledge the reading titles and minutes each night at the bottom of agendas. Students are of course encouraged to read over weekends too:)
2) Dr Seuss Reading Bingo- students can earn a prize sheet as a reward for completing 15 of these activities over the course of the month. These can be used simultaneously as they earn reading minutes!

Thank you for supporting your child as we push them to be voracious readers with improved reading stamina!

This week in Math:

Students are continuing a lengthy, but exciting Fractions unit. Lots of vocab is important in understanding this concept. Here is a parent guide for helping you and your student understand our main learning outcomes

Current vocab: numerator, denominator, unit fraction, partition, number line, visual model

TIMED MULTIPLICATION QUIZZES: will continue this week with 6’s. We have previously done 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s.  The expectation now is that student complete a 16 question quiz with 15/16 or better accuracy within 90 seconds. This will be done paper and pencil version Friday morning. Students will prepare for this by practicing throughout the week using activities from their math board. MAKEUP QUIZZES WILL BE TUESDAYS!!

This week in Science/Social Studies:

3.E.1 Recognize the major components and patterns observed in the Earth/Moon/Sun system.

3.E.1.1 Recognize that the Earth is part of a system called the solar system that includes the sun (a star), planets, and many moons and the Earth is the third planet from the sun in our solar system.

3.E.1.2 Recognize that changes in the length and direction of an object’s shadow indicate the apparent changing position of the Sun during the day although the patterns of the stars in the sky, to include the Sun, stay the same.
