Weekly Update 2.4.20

By In News & Updates On February 5, 2020

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Tuesday Folders will come home today. Please review work samples with your child.
  • 2nd quarter report cards come home THIS Friday, February 7th. Please return signed report card envelopes next week.
  • Your child’s next multiplication quiz will come home THURSDAY in agendas. Mrs. V has an all day training Tuesday and I’d rather not leave that to our sub. Please keep the sundae page in plastic- you may remove quizzes as they come home to post on the fridge or to study from.
  • Friday, February 14th we will have a small Valentine exchange in the afternoon. This is optional but if you bring something, please make sure there is something for everyone. Yesterday, I posted a class story with an attachment to all student names. We have 20 students and 1 teacher. I can’t speak for the kids but the teacher loves sour candy, peppermint patties, and slim jims 🙂

This week in Literacy:

  • Students will receive a fresh new text collection, and begin our study with the story “Knots on a Counting Rope”, a touching story about a Native American boy working through his struggle of blindness with the help of his grandfather. Our focus is on the theme/central message of the story which is a tricky concept for most 3rd graders, but is prevalent in this text.
  • Students brought home instructions for at at home alien project today. This is due MON, FEB 24th! They will conduct their writing and research components at school, but may do additional work at home if they desire. Aliens who can survive on their planet are due at school. word-alien

We will continue “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. This story piggybacks off other stories we have read about war stricken places where obtaining drinking water is a daily struggle.

Our Famous Person Teaparty was a HUGE success! Thank you so much for your efforts to make your child look the part. They really enjoyed the experience. We couldn’t have done it without your donations either, so special thank you for the snacks, treats, and paper products!

This week in Math:

Students are continuing a fun and challenging unit on Area and Perimeter which puts their multiplication fact knowledge to work! This is a concept that students enjoy but can get easily confused with if they rush or mix up concepts. Area is the space INSIDE something and we teach it 2 ways. A basic quadrilateral is solved by multiplying Length X Width to get Area. Students will also use unit squares to count area, particularly for odd-shaped polygons. Please see tutorials and practice with games as needed. word- area

Your child should have an icecream sundae sheet in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments!

This quarter in Science: Our next science unit is: Objects In the Sky

3.E.1 Recognize the major components and patterns observed in the Earth/Moon/Sun system.
3.E.2 Compare the structure of the Earth’s surface using models or three-dimensional diagrams.
