- Tuesday Folders come not come home today. Look for a full folder next week.
- Today we enjoyed a performance from Billy Jonas and explored some great music! Thanks to our PTA for making this happen!
- On Wednesday, March 6th from 9:20-12:00, all 3rd graders will participate in an learning reenactment of immigrants entering Ellis Island. Please read and return the bottom portion of the flyer in folders today with specific details for this event. It is also posted at the bottom of this update.
- We still need 2 more volunteers!! Our classroom will be the Interview station and the Medical Room on Ellis Island Day. It is super fun for parents and students! Message Mrs. V if you’d like to help!
- Students will do a small valentine exchange at 3:00 on 2/14. This is optional, but I sent home a list of student names in last week’s folder.
- This Friday, Feb 15th is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 1:15. There will be no school for students on Monday, February 18th.
This week in Literacy:
Students are reading “Paul Bunyan” this week and will explore the tales of John Henry, Pecos Bill, Annie Oakley, and other legends from tall tales. We will continue to focus on character traits. We are able to make lots of connections with our last story, and focusing again on characters, theme, and even figurative language. word- tall tale
Students will be spending a big chunk of the next few months reading The Wild Robot. They are really loving it and are learning to look into more challenging stories for deeper understanding and bigger problems. Students do not need their own copy, but may enjoy getting one of this, or it’s sequel- The Wild Robot Escapes.
This week in Math:
Students are continuing a lengthy, but exciting Fractions unit. Lots of vocab is important in understanding this concept. Here is a parent guide for helping you and your student understand our main learning outcomes
Current vocab: numerator, denominator, unit fraction, partition, number line, visual model
Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, square, rhombus, arrays, repeated addition, area, perimeter, rectilinear area, commutative property (flip flop rule), number line, product, distributive (break apart method), associative property, graphs, pictographs, bar graphs
Timed multiplication quizzes continue week!! We will take 9’s and 10’s this week with makeups on Friday. Your child should have an icecream sundae sheet and data table in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments!
This quarter in Social Studies: We are participating in an Immigration Unit to reach SS objectives in the following areas.

We have started a research unit about immigration in Social Studies. We will be reading, writing, and researching in class about this topic.
Students are being asked to research their family history for our culminating activity. Students will need your help to find this information about the history of their family and ancestors. A packet is going home today so you will have two weeks to work on finding this information. This packet is due by Tuesday, February 19th. This will give you two weekends to help you complete your research with your child.
On Wednesday, March 6th children will be “dressing” as an immigrant from their individual countries based on their family history research. Please do not go out and buy anything for this, just items from home will do. This is an opportunity for your child to be creative. This will be a simulation of students entering The United States through Ellis Island as many immigrants did. We understand that not all families immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island. However, we chose this avenue since it was the largest immigration station in the United States during this time period. Students will also be asked to bring a pillow case that includes some of their personal belongings from their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Please avoid electronic devices as a personal belonging, as they were not yet invented in the year 1910.
Be on the lookout for a message from your child’s teacher for information about opportunities to volunteer. We will need 4 volunteers for each classroom. A volunteer meeting will be held on February 13 from 1:50-2:30 in Mrs. Stanton’s room.
As a part of this day students will be performing with Mrs. Huddle patriotic songs in the gym. We invite all parents to attend this special performance at 1:50 in the gym.
