This week in Literacy:
We finished our chapter book “The Year of Miss. Agnes” and will be writing a “what happens next” kind of narrative piece telling WHY we think Miss Agnes came back (spoiler alert;) and what will happen now. Students will draft this, then tell their story using an awesome App to allow Miss Agnes to tell her own story. On Friday, please ask your child to show you their TellagamiEDU project via their Google Drive! word- Tellagami
In reading, we will read the legend of “The Frog Princess”- an Tlingit story from Alaska, and then will compare and contrast the last 3 stories we have read to one another. Our focus continues to be on how character actions effect the sequence of the story, and what the theme or main idea of the text is.
Spelling RETESTS on the “100 Words You Need to Know” continue this FRIDAY, December 9th. This quiz is for GROUP TWO words ONLY! Only students who missed words the first time around need to prepare to retest. If you are not sure, check your child’s agenda for circled words.
This week in Math:
Students are working primarily with the PROPERTIES for multiplication (commutative, distributive, and associative) and are continuing to solve MULTI STEP addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through number lines, arrays, visual models, and more! Multiplication/division will be the MAJOR focus on 2nd quarter. Memorization of facts is not the goal (YET…) rather, I want to ensure students know when and WHY multiplication should be used. There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.
Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, square, rhombus, arrays, repeated addition, commutative property (flip flop rule), number line, product, distributive (break apart method), associative property
A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here
This quarter in Science: Students are studying objects in the sky and will conduct research and experiments to help understand the following objectives:
3.E.1 | Recognize the major components and patterns observed in the Earth/Moon/Sun system. |
3.E.2 | Compare the structures of the Earth’s surface using models or three-dimensional diagrams. |
4.E.1 | Explain the causes of day and night and phases of the moon. |
