Be on the Lookout for…
- Tuesday folders are full of school papers and work samples this week. You will also find 2nd quarter interim reports. Please sign and return these.
- Scholastic Book Orders are due Wednesday, December 6th by 4pm. Please use this link and our class code: GPPF6 to purchase!
- Mrs. Vaughan’s Christmas wish list is located here 🙂
- Students are beginning a Kindness Challenge today. Traditionally it takes 28 days, but I am challenging them to do at least 28 kind things by our last school day of 2017. Students will color boxes (they can also create their own on the back). Students will earn dojos for each DAY they do something kind (not for the amount of kind things they do, although more is always better!) They can also document their kind actions here for our counselor Ms. Poe to see! word-kindness confetti
- Tomorrow, December 6th, students are invited to get festive and have fun by wearing HOLIDAY SOCKS. If you don’t have any, just wear a funky outfit:)
This week in Literacy:
Students are reading “City Homes”, an informational text about the ways people live in cities all over the world. Look at this awesome map we created together of all the places we learned about! Readers will be asked to gather information from illustrations and our focus will be identifying the main idea and noticing important text features. This connects well to our geography unit. Students also began their Island Project today. In a week or so, they will have a final product that demonstrates their understanding of the 5 Themes of Geography used to create a special place of their own.
This week students will continue their opinion writing piece-I will model good techniques for persuading others, then students will choose a topic meaningful to them to work on. Some of you parents may be the recipients of these letters!
This week in Math:
Timed multiplication quizzes continue week with 3’s!! Your child should have an icecream sundae sheet and data table in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments!
Students are finishing a unit of UNKNOWNS and the PROPERTIES for multiplication (commutative, distributive, and associative) and are continuing to solve MULTI STEP addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through number lines, arrays, visual models, and more! Multiplication/division will be the MAJOR focus on 2nd quarter. Students will begin multiplication fluency challenges after Thanksgiving- stay tuned for more info. There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.
Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, square, rhombus, arrays, repeated addition, commutative property (flip flop rule), number line, product, distributive (break apart method), associative property
