Weekly Update 12.4.18

By In News & Updates On December 4, 2018

There is LOTS of info coming home in folders today and in this online update. Please read carefully. The secret word is embedded below as well šŸ™‚

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Tuesday foldersĀ are full of school papers and work samples this week. One of the items in there is a Christmas card from my family to yours. If you have one you are able to share, I’d love to display it for our class to share the joy this month šŸ™‚
  • Scholastic Book Orders are due Friday, December 7th by 4pm.Ā Please use this link and our class code: GPPF6 to purchase!
  • You will receive a copy of the NCCheckIns score for 1st quarter math. This was an online test on the major standards covered 1st quarter. These results are helpful, but not the sole indicator of student success. Please keep that in mind and consider your child’s whole body of work.
  • Some students will take the ITBS test on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. If your child received a golden permission form, you should have returned that showing consent for their participation. If you did not receive one of these forms, your child will be participating in their regular day.
  • There was a note about our custodian Mr. Day in the class story posted last night. Please send any donations towards that cause by Monday the 10th.
  • Mrs. Vaughan will not be here this Friday, Dec 7th. My husband and I are taking our son to NYC for the weekend. It has been his dream since watching Home Alone 2 a few years ago. Ms. Baddick will be here for the class that day. She will be checking dojo if any needs arise.
  • Mrs. Vaughan’s wish list is located hereĀ šŸ™‚
  • 2nd quarter interim reports will come home this Friday, Dec 7th. Please sign and return them asap.
  • Students will participate in some fun holiday activities Thursday, Dec 20th. If you would like to help run these activities, please let me know asap. Those who have already offered, be on the lookout for a message with details later this week!

This week in Literacy:

The Kiwanis Club of Holly Springs visited us this morning and gave each 3rd grader their very own dictionary! Students are welcome to bring these home in their backpacks, but would be most useful at school. It is a really great resource and is theirs forever! Thank you Kiwanis!

StudentsĀ are reading “City Homes”, an informational text about the ways people live in cities all over the world.Ā Look at this awesome map we created together of all the places we learned about!Ā Readers will be asked to gather information from illustrations and our focus will be identifyingĀ the main idea and noticing important text features. word-google maps rock!

Students are beginning a new writing piece this week based on the book “The Best Part of Me“. This book is written by a local author and teacher! Students will focus on something special about their body that makes them strong, beautiful, or unique. Students will create a special final piece that will be frameworthy šŸ™‚

This week in Math:

Students are continuing to work with multiplication and division strategies for the next several weeks. They are now expected to learn specific facts and practice with the goal of fact fluency. We are reviewing the strategies used in multiplication (Number line, repeated addition, skip counting, arrays, and equal groups drawings) and will also cover unknowns and the PROPERTIES for multiplication (commutative, distributive, and associative). We will continue toĀ solve MULTI STEP addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through number lines, arrays, visual models, and more! Ā Multiplication/division will be the MAJOR focus on 2nd quarter. Memorization of facts is an expectation come January when students begin their timed quizzes! May as well start prepping now! There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in thisĀ amazing math review resource organized by skill.
