Weekly Update 12.12.17

By In News & Updates On December 12, 2017

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Tuesday folders will not come home today.
  • Students are still underway on the Kindness Challenge. Traditionally it takes 28 days, but I am challenging them to do at least 28 kind things by our last school day of 2017. Students will color boxes (they can also create their own on the back). Students will earn dojos for each DAY they do something kind (not for the amount of kind things they do, although more is always better!) They can also document their kind actions here for our counselor Ms. Poe to see!
  • Is your family sending out a Christmas card this year? If so, we would love one for our classroom card wall! Please send with your child asap so I can adorn my room with their smiley faces:) Email versions are ok too if you ran out of hard copies!
  • Tomorrow, December 12th, students are invited to get festive and have fun by wearing HOLIDAY SCARVES AND MITTENS- holiday warm hats are fine with me too! If you don’t have any, just wear a funky outfit:)
  • We will have a great day of fun on Wed, Dec 20th. All Oakview students are encouraged to wear holiday shirts for the day. If you have not sent in your items for Ava’s mom (Angela Vincent) or have not sent a wrapped book for our holiday book exchange, please do so ASAP. I am happy to provide a book for any child who cannot do so, but will need a day or 2 to get it!
  • The fun will continue Thurs, Dec 21st. It is an early release day, but I invite my students to wear pj’s a bring a cuddly stuffed animal for a hot cocoa and movie morning (students voted for Santa Paws). If you would prefer your child NOT have hot cocoa or not watch the film, please send me a message. word- happy OWLidays 🙂

This week in Literacy:

Students are continuing to focus on nonfiction text and text features. We are reading “Deep Down”, a nonfiction text about extreme places where groups of people live. These aligns wonderfully with our social studies unit about geography which we finish this week.

This week students will continue their opinion writing piece-I will model good techniques for persuading others, then students will choose a topic meaningful to them to work on. Some of you parents may be the recipients of these letters!

This week in Math:

Timed multiplication quizzes continue week with 4’s!! Your child should have an icecream sundae sheet and data table in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments!

Students are finishing a unit of  word problems and multiplication properties (commutative, distributive, and associative). We will begin our graphing unit on Thursday of this week! There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.

Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, square, rhombus, arrays, repeated addition, commutative property (flip flop rule), number line, product, distributive (break apart method), associative property

A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here

This week in Science: We begin a new unit on the Human Body this week!

3.L.1 Understand human body systems and how they are essential for life: protection, movement, and support.
3.L.1.1 Compare the difference functions of the skeletal and muscular systems.
3.L.1.2 Explain why skin is necessary for protection and for the body to remain healthy.
