By carrievaughan In News & Updates On December 1, 2020
Tuesday folders will come home today. They do not include work samples (those will be every several weeks) but have a study guide for Friday’s math test and a Christmas card from me. Also look for your child’s Education Galaxy and Xtramath log in information pasted to their resources page in their home/dojo folder.
Tomorrow, Wed Dec 2nd is an asynchronous day for students. Work expectations and assignments will be posted to Google Classroom and need to be completed before Thursday.
Be on the Lookout for…
- Happy Holidays to you and yours. Our room is full of holiday cheer and we’d love to add your family Christmas card. If you are sending cards and have one to share, I’d love to display it for our class to share the joy this month!
- 2nd quarter interim reports will come home this Friday, December 4th. Please sign and return them asap.
- Our class earned several prizes from Boosterthon/DanceFit. One of those is a mystery reader. We cannot have volunteers in the building but if you are interested in doing a Q&A and reading a book to our class through a Google Meet, please message me with your availability. It would be about 15-20 minutes and would be a secret!
- We also earned Sports Day this Thurs Dec 3rd and Hat Day Fri Dec 4th.
This week in Literacy:
Yesterday, students began reading “City Homes”, an informational text about the ways people live in cities all over the world. Look at this awesome map we can create together of all the places we learned about! Readers will be asked to gather information from illustrations and our focus will be identifying the main idea and noticing important text features.
Students are beginning a new writing piece this week based on the book “The Best Part of Me“. This book is written by a local author and teacher! Students will focus on something special about their body that makes them strong, beautiful, or unique. Students will create a special final piece that will be frameworthy 🙂 word-hollyjolly
This week in Math:
Students are continuing to work with multiplication and division strategies for the next several weeks. They are now expected to learn specific facts and practice with the goal of fact fluency. We are reviewing the strategies used in multiplication (Number line, repeated addition, skip counting, arrays, and equal groups drawings) and will also cover unknowns and the PROPERTIES for multiplication (commutative, distributive, and associative). We will continue to solve MULTI STEP addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through number lines, arrays, visual models, and more! Multiplication/division will be the MAJOR focus on 2nd quarter. Memorization of facts is an expectation come January when students begin their timed quizzes! May as well start prepping now! There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.
