Weekly Update 10.8.19

By In News & Updates On October 8, 2019

Tuesday Folders are coming home today and contain student work samples

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Fall parent teacher conferences will take place mid-late October. Sign up for these here! At these conferences we will take a personalized look at your child’s performance and any assessment results. For most of you, this will be a good time because it’s just prior to 1st quarter report cards. If you feel you require a conference prior to this date, please dojo or email me your concerns and what meeting times could work for you.
  • Please plan to attend 3rd grade’s Curriculum Night TONIGHT, Tuesday, October 8th at 6:00 in our media center.  It should last 30-45 minutes. This session is for parents only. This will be a chance for you to hear about 3rd grade testing and expectations and interact with our curriculum.
  • Mark your calendars and please make plans to attend our student Food Truck Rodeo on Friday, October 18th! A brightly colored information sheet came home last week and includes your child’s presentation and lunch time. Please look at what time your child will present and block off a few hours of your late morning/early afternoon to join in the learning and lunch! Questions? Please message me!
  • We are in need of paper towel and toilet paper rolls (not the paper, just the roll left behind) for our food truck crafts. Please save these and send in!!
  • Students have a cheat sheet with all their logins and passwords to help you access these items from home. This includes: GSuite (Drive, Docs, Classroom, Drawings, etc), Education Galaxy, BrainPop, Big Universe, Dreambox, and Flipgrid. Students also have an EPIC! account, but that can only be utilized inside the school. Please keep this precious sheet in agendas so students always have it!
  • I am excited to announce that students began working on Dreambox last week! The county has invested in this great digital tool that students can use at school and at home. Students will work on their own pace to fill in learning gaps and expand math problem solving skills. Students will access this through their WAKEID portal if using a computer. If accessing through a tablet or smartphone, they will need the log in info from their password sheet. I will receive more trainings about this resource during workdays this year, but am told this is designed to be paper free (no working out problems needed) and with little to no parent help. word- dreambox

This week in Literacy:

  • Our focus in reading this week is on understanding the Point of View or perspective of different characters. This can be hard for students to grasp that one story can have multiple view points, so a variety of books help us understand how this is important. Some of the books we will share are: Giraffe Problems, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, Bug in a Vacuum, and Two Bad Ants.
  • Students are continuing their Food Truck Business Plans and preparing for the rodeo on October 18th!

This week in Math:

We are doing a variety of addition and subtraction of methods.  Some of these may NOT be familiar to you as parents so it is VERY important to use the example coming home from what students did that day. Some very helpful parent links to what we are doing can be found here: Place Value Addition    Show All Totals/Partial Sums   Addition on a # Line   Place Value Subtraction  Subtraction on a Number Line

I am noticing some major gaps in what students SHOULD know, so please look over assignments with them to ensure they understand. If frustration levels are reached, write me a note or send me an email. I want to address it asap!

This quarter in social studies: In 1st quarter, students will learn about Economics and Financial Literacy

Objectives for this quarter are:

3.E.1 Understand how the location of regions affects activity in a market economy.
