Weekly Update 10.22.19 AND 10.29.19
By carrievaughan In News & Updates On October 22, 2019
Tuesday Folders will come home today. It is full of school papers and student work samples. In folders you will find a Plus/Delta chart that each student filled out for themselves based on classroom expectations they follow regularly, and those they need to work on. We do this regularly as a class to evaluate our performance and understanding. I was proud of how well students knew themselves and hope they will make an effort to improve their delta (triangle) skills.
Be on the Lookout for…
- Our class will engage in a “Book Tasting” on Monday, October 28th in our classroom. This is a fun way to incorporate new book samplings the way your might taste food. It excites kids and encourages them to sample new genres. I will need a little help to make this a success. If you are willing to help me set up or donate items, please click the link here to do so.
- Students in our class will take the NCcheckin for Quarter 1 math skills on Tuesday, October 29th. Please make sure your child is prompt and present that day.
- Mrs. Vaughan was gifted new stools for our classroom, yay! I would love if a handy parent would be willing to stop by one day ans assemble the 5 stools. I have tools! Please just message me your availability:)
- Our field trip to the Durham Museum of Life and Science in next Wednesday, October 30th. If you asked to be a chaperone, you will receive more information later this week. Please be sure you have been cleared through WCPSS and are prepared to pay your $10 chaperone fee at the museum prior to 10am that day.
- Students DO have school on Thursday, October 31st. It will be a fun day for sure, but please no costumes (per WCPSS policy).
- There is NO SCHOOL Friday, November 1st- Teacher Work Day. word-pumpkin
- The Food Truck Rodeo last week was AWESOME!! Thank you for your support and help in making it an unforgettable day for students.
- The Carolina Hurricanes are partnering with WCPSS for a 3rd year to promote reading. With each 20 minute segment that a student reads, they log their reading on the Readvolution website (there’s a hurricane in their portal to click on).
- COGAT testing for all 3rd graders will be Nov 4-6 in our classroom. These are shorter tests that will take about 45 minutes each morning on those days.
- Students have a cheat sheet with all their logins and passwords to help you access these items from home. This includes: GSuite (Drive, Docs, Classroom, Drawings, etc), Education Galaxy, BrainPop, Big Universe, Dreambox, and Flipgrid. Students also have an EPIC! account, but that can only be utilized inside the school. Please keep this precious sheet in agendas so students always have it!
This week in Literacy:
Students are enjoying a variety of tasks with the fall favorite book “Room on the Broom”. Although a picture book, it is full of tricky words and guides students through plot and how characters actions affect the story.
Students also started reading groups in full swing this week and will learn how to find evidence for their answers in NONfiction texts. We will learn about bats, spiders, and the Human Body as we begin exploring our new science unit.
This week in Math:
We are doing a variety of addition and subtraction of methods. Some of these may NOT be familiar to you as parents so it is VERY important to use the example coming home from what students did that day. Some very helpful parent links to what we are doing can be found here: Place Value Addition Show All Totals/Partial Sums Addition on a # Line Place Value Subtraction Subtraction on a Number Line
I am noticing some major gaps in what students SHOULD know, so please look over assignments with them to ensure they understand. If frustration levels are reached, write me a note or send me an email. I want to address it asap!
This week in Science:
3.L.1 Understand human body systems and how they are essential for life: protection, movement and support.
3.L.1.1 Compare the different functions of the skeletal and muscular system.
3.L.1.2 Explain why skin is necessary for protection and for the body to remain healthy.
