  • 🪅🇲🇽🌮 As you may know, this next month is National Hispanic Heritage Month. Students are already reading books from countries around the world and we will dive deeper into different cultures and persons of interest. We always have an end of quarter reading celebration and I’d like to bring some fiesta vibes to it! If you are willing to contribute an item to make this a reality, I would really appreciate it. Please visit this Amazon link (the party items are at the top of this list)
  • 📚🕵️Would you be interested in being a mystery reader in our classroom? This is great for parents, grandparents, or maybe even high school age or older siblings. All you have to do is choose a date, and send me 3 fun facts/clues about yourself. The students will have fun trying to guess who is coming to read that day. This will be 15-20 mins at either 12:45 or 2:00 pm. You can choose a book or I can pick one for you. Please check the link here to sign up. I will post more slots in January.
  • Students will take the STAR math assessment on their devices TOMORROW morning. Results will be shared with you in coming weeks. This is a screener and students do not need to study or prepare for this test. word- STAR

This week in Literacy:

Students will begin developing goals for their own Overcoming Challenges paragraph. We will read “More Than Anything” to see yet another example of people overcoming learning challenges and the importance of books and literacy in children’s lives.

This week in Math:

We are working in Unit 3, which is stories with Addition and Subtraction. This unit always proves to be tricky for students. Please view the parent guide to help you assist your child and understand the various addition and subtraction lingo.

There are some cheat sheets in agendas . Please keep those in agendas so they can be used at school and at home during unit 3 which focuses on a variety of addition and subtraction of methods.  We do teach regrouping as a strategy this year (yay, finally the way you learned growing up), but it is alongside the methods they have been taught previously to ensure core understanding. Some of these may NOT be familiar to you as parents so it is VERY important to use the example coming home from what students did that day. Some very helpful parent links to what we are doing can be found here: Place Value Addition    Show All Totals/Partial Sums   Addition on a # Line   Place Value Subtraction  Subtraction on a Number Line

This quarter in Social Studies: In 1st quarter students will focus on exploring civics and government

3.C&G.1.1 Compare the structure and function of both state and local government.

3.C&G.1.2 Classify the roles and responsibilities of leaders in state and local government.

3.C&G.1.3 Compare how state, local, and tribal governments help solve problems within communities.
