Be on the Lookout for…

  • Tuesday Folders are coming home today. They include work samples and a note about our multiplication quizzes. Please review work and return folders.
  • We WILL have school Friday, January 18th as a makeup snow day. We will NOT have school Monday, January 21st due to MLK holiday.

This week in Literacy:

Students are continuing our literacy unit on interesting and unfamiliar places, by reading a fictional narrative called “The Song of Sky and Sand”. It focuses on a girl who lives in one of the extreme places we have learned about. Our focus is on the theme/central message of the story which is a tricky concept for most 3rd graders.

Students will undergo mid year MClass benchmark assessments for the TRC, Dibels, and Daze measures this week and next week. These are one on one tests done to see what growth they have made in oral and written comprehension at the midway point of the year.

In writing, we are focusing on informational biographies. Students have chosen a famous person to focus on for the upcoming student Famous Person Teaparty on Friday, January 25th. They will complete research and digital projects in class, but feel free to let the fun continue at home. Students will be expected to look and act like the person they have chosen, so please do what you can to help with this. Please DO NOT spend a bunch of money on this. Handmade or re-purposed items to resemble their person are plenty. The focus will be on their mannerisms and research! The Ducksters site and the Brainpop site will be our primary resources if you want to access from home. This event is for students only, but I will take lots of pictures and all paper and digital products will be saved on Google Drive so you can share with loved ones.

This week in Math:

Timed multiplication quizzes begin THIS week!! Your child should have an icecream sundae sheet and data table in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments! word-multiplication minute

Students will be working with geometry vocabulary and concepts over these next 2 weeks. This topic is fun but vocabulary is KEY to understanding. For this reason, students will keep a geometry cheat sheet inside their agendas. For homework this week in math, they will need to shuffle and rematch vocab words daily. Please help however you can with this.

There are tons of great resources for math- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.

This quarter in Social Studies: This quarter we will have fun exploring geography across the world and in our own region. We will study how people use their land and what causes people to change their locations.

3.G.1 Understand the earth’s patterns by using the 5 themes of geography: (location, place, human-environment interaction, movement and regions)
