This week in Literacy:
Students will discover many types of figurative language this week with a focus on idioms. We work work to find these exaggerations and uncover their actual meanings.
Students began a new read aloud today and will be spending a big chunk of the next few months reading The Wild Robot. They are really loving it and are learning to look into more challenging stories for deeper understanding and bigger problems. Students do not need their own copy, but may enjoy getting one of this, or it’s sequel- The Wild Robot Escapes. word-Rozzum
In writing, we are still working on informational biographies. Students have chosen a famous person to focus on for the upcoming student Famous Person Teaparty on Friday, February 1st (postponed from the 25th). This builds upon the project they completed in 2nd grade for the Wax Museum and challenges children to not only role play as their chosen person, but create a personal Facebook page for them and a movie about their life. They will complete research and digital projects in class, but feel free to let the fun continue at home. Students will be expected to look and act like the person they have chosen, so please do what you can to help with this. Please DO NOT spend a bunch of money on this. Handmade or re-purposed items to resemble their person are plenty. The focus will be on their mannerisms and research! The Ducksters site and the Brainpop site will be our primary resources if you want to access from home. This event is for students only, but I will take lots of pictures and all paper and digital products will be saved on Google Drive so you can share with loved ones.
This week in Math:
Students are beginning a fun and challenging unit on Area and Perimeter which puts their multiplication fact knowledge to work! This is a concept that students enjoy but can get easily confused with if they rush or mix up concepts. Area is the space INSIDE something and we teach it 2 ways. A basic quadrilateral is solved by multiplying Length X Width to get Area. Students will also use unit squares to count area, particularly for odd-shaped polygons. Please see tutorials and practice with games as needed. Students will bring home a cheat sheet today to help!
Timed multiplication quizzes continue week!!We will take 5’s on Thursday the 24th. Your child should have an icecream sundae sheet and data table in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments!
