Weekly Update 1.21.20

By In News & Updates On January 20, 2020

Be on the Lookout for…

  • This is the last week of 2nd quarter! I can’t believe we are already halfway through this school year!
  • Tuesday Folders come home today. Please look through and review missed work with your child.
  • There is no school for students on Wednesday, January 29th for a teacher workday.
  • Your child’s next multiplication quiz will come home Thursday in agendas. I am proud that ALL student’s passed their 1’s and 2’s:) Please keep the sundae page in plastic- you may remove quizzes as they come home to post on the fridge or to study from.
  • A scholastic book flyer packet is coming home in folders today. Instructions are stapled to the front. These are so great for motivating readers! Please let me know if you have any questions or need recommendations!

This week in Literacy:

Students are starting a new book this week called “About Earth”. This book shows text features we have worked on lots this quarter, and ties into our new science unit about Objects in the Sky. Students will do a collaborative art project starting tomorrow using magazines to show off their knowledge of text features. If you have extra old magazines at home, PLEASE send in tomorrow!! word- text features

We will begin “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. This story piggybacks off other stories we have read about war stricken places where obtaining drinking water is a daily struggle.

In writing, we are continuing informational biographies. Students have chosen their person and are researching them in preparation for the upcoming student Famous Person Teaparty on Tuesday, January 28th. They will complete research and digital projects in class, but feel free to let the fun continue at home. Students will be expected to look and act like the person they have chosen, so please do what you can to help with this. Please DO NOT spend a bunch of money on this. Handmade or re-purposed items to resemble their person are plenty. The focus will be on their mannerisms and research! The Ducksters site and the Brainpop site will be our primary resources if you want to access from home. This event is for students only, but I will take lots of pictures and all paper and digital products will be saved on Google Drive so you can share with loved ones. Please visit this link to help make this an unforgettable morning.

This week in Math:

Timed multiplication quizzes began last week!! Your child should have an icecream sundae sheet in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments! The 3’s quiz will be only Thursday (due to the short week).

This is a wrap up and review week in math. We will take our end of geometry unit test, review all 2nd quarter skills, and take the NCCheckins on Thursday morning.

This quarter in Science: Our next science unit is: Objects In the Sky

3.E.1 Recognize the major components and patterns observed in the Earth/Moon/Sun system.
3.E.2 Compare the structure of the Earth’s surface using models or three-dimensional diagrams.
