Weekly Update 1.14.20

By In News & Updates On January 14, 2020

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Tuesday Folders will not come home today. Look for a full folder next week.
  • There is no school Monday, January 20th in remembrance of MLK, Jr.
  • There is no school for students on Wednesday, January 29th for a teacher workday.
  • Your child’s first multiplication quiz will come home today in agendas. I am proud that ALL student’s passed their 1’s:) Please keep the sundae page in plastic- you may remove quizzes as they come home to post on the fridge or to study from.

This week in Literacy:

Students are continuing our literacy unit on interesting and unfamiliar places, by reading a fictional narrative called “The Song of Sky and Sand”. It focuses on a girl who lives in one of the extreme places we have learned about. Our focus is on the theme/central message of the story which is a tricky concept for most 3rd graders.

We are finishing our “Restart” read aloud this week. Next week we will begin “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. This story piggybacks off other stories we have read about war stricken places where obtaining drinking water is a daily struggle.

In writing, we are focusing on informational biographies. Students have chosen their person and are researching them in preparation for the upcoming student Famous Person Teaparty on Tuesday, January 28th. They will complete research and digital projects in class, but feel free to let the fun continue at home. Students will be expected to look and act like the person they have chosen, so please do what you can to help with this. Please DO NOT spend a bunch of money on this. Handmade or re-purposed items to resemble their person are plenty. The focus will be on their mannerisms and research! The Ducksters site and the Brainpop site will be our primary resources if you want to access from home. This event is for students only, but I will take lots of pictures and all paper and digital products will be saved on Google Drive so you can share with loved ones. Please visit this link to help make this an unforgettable morning.

This week in Math:

Timed multiplication quizzes begin this week!! Your child should have an icecream sundae sheet in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments! THE 2’S QUIZ IS THIS THURSDAY!! word-fact masters

Students will be working with geometry vocabulary and concepts over these next 2 weeks. This topic is fun but vocabulary is KEY to understanding. For this reason, students will keep a geometry cheat sheet inside their agendas. For homework this week in math, they will need to shuffle and rematch vocab words daily. Please help however you can with this.
