Weekly Update 9.25.18

By In News & Updates On September 25, 2018

Hang with me guys…this is a long one!

Tuesday Folders are coming home today and contain school paperwork and information. Student work samples will come home next Tuesday.

Be on the Lookout for…

  • THANK YOU to any who placed a Scholastic book order! We earned over $100 in books for our classroom! The kids were SO excited to see our new reads and were each given their very own copy of our new read aloud, “Restart”.
  • 3rd grade students took the Beginning of Grade (BOG) assessment last week. This is a reading test which shows what students already know, sets a benchmark to measure growth against this year, and serves as a Read to Achieve exemption if students score high enough. It does not go on the report card. Scores on this assessment are coming home today. I will go over these results, and all of our beginning of the year results at 1st quarter conferences in October, but if you have questions before then please let me know.
  • Diaper Drive –The Oakview Elementary first graders are collecting diapers and wipes to be donated to the families who have been devastated by the effects of Hurricane Florence. Our hope is that we can show kindness and generosity to those in need as well as help teach our 1st graders all about doing their part in a larger community! This is 100% optional and know that many of you have already generously donated to this cause in many other ways. *Diapers and Wipes can be any size, quantity, or brand! *Items can be brought to your child’s classroom any morning  *All diapers and wipes need to be sent in no later than Friday (9/28) *We would love for you to share this with your family, friends, and neighbors!!
  • Mark your calendar and please plan to attend 3rd grade’s Curriculum Night on Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:00 in our classroom, 2315.  It should last 3-45 minutes. This session is for parents only. This will be a chance for you to interact with our curriculum, ask classroom questions, and see some of the things your 3rd grader has been working on.
  • Our Oakview PTA is working on a Phantom Fundraiser. Please see your child’s folder for more information. Thank you for supporting our school!
  • School Picture Day will be Wed, Oct 3rd. Please see Tuesday Folders for order information.
  • Field trip details and payment information is coming home in a packet today. Please take your time and read carefully. Make sure all necessary forms are completely filled out. Money will be collected October 1st-25th. The online school payment (OSP) system is HIGHLY encouraged so large amounts of money is not in the hands of children and I am not using instructional time to receipt money. All paperwork should be returned by Oct 25th. We are accepting unlimited chaperones for our 1st trip to the Science Museum on November 2nd, however you must be a registered WCPSS volunteer which you can do in person at the Oakview office and you will pay a $10 chaperone fee on OSP. If you are interested in chaperoning a student group, please dojo Mrs. Vaughan and let her know. You will need to pay the $10 entrance fee at the museum that day. Thanks!

This week in Literacy:

  • Students are finishing literacy assessments this week in the areas of fluency, comprehension and context clues. These will help give us an idea of what students know and give us a baseline on how far students will grow this year.
  • We are also learning about characters- their traits and motivation, and how their actions impact the story. Students will practice telling basic story elements and answering right there questions.
  • In writing, we are having a great time writing a personal narrative about an injury we have had. The more details, the better the story! Our stories will be told in a Diary of a Wimpy Kid format using band-aids as the illustrations to show our story:) word- ouch

This week in Math:

This week students are wrapping up Unit 1 where we focused on when to use multiplication and division, and connected patterns to this skill. Those assessments will come home next week. We will begin a short unit on using data to solve problems. Student learning outcomes are as follows:

  1. Data can be collected using a frequency table. (NC.3.MD.3)
  2. Data can be organized by creating scaled bar graphs and scaled picture graphs. (NC.3.MD.3)
  3. Data in graphs can be used to answer questions and compare categories.  (NC.3.MD.3)

Please look out for the answer to Tuesday and Wednesday night’s homework on a dojo message 🙂

A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here
