  • Mrs. Vaughan is attending the NCCAT Conference in Ocracoke this week Monday-Thursday to gather great ideas and tech tools to enhance literacy instruction. Mrs. Baddick will be covering our class, so your child is in great hands. I will still send a weekly update, and Mrs. B and I will both be able to reply to you on Dojo but make sure all transportation changes and important notes are hand written and delivered just in case.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have partnered with WCPSS to motivate kids to read! We are jumping on board in hopes we will motivate readers and win some free hockey tickets! Please use the link to log reading minutes and use the printed calendar so I can award dojo points weekly for completion. This will also help keep track in case your child can’t make it to a device to log nightly. You can backdate, catch up, etc as needed.

This week in Literacy:

  • Students continued “About Earth” this week. It ties is wonderfully with our science unit, and introduces lots of useful nonfiction text features. We will check out a variety of resources such as Brainpop and PebbleGo (user: oakv and password: school) to research our the planets in our solar system this week. Please see below in the science section for more information.

This week in Math:

We are continuing to connect repeated addition and patterns to open our minds to multiplication and division concepts. The will be the MAJOR focus on 2nd quarter. Memorization of facts is not the goal (YET…) rather, I want to ensure students know when and WHY multiplication should be used. There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.

Concepts to review: place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with borrowing, attributes, quadrilateral, parallelogram, rhombus, rectangle, trapezoid, square

A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here

This quarter in Science: Students are studying objects in the sky and will conduct research and experiments to help understand the following objectives:

3.E.1 Recognize the major components and patterns observed in the Earth/Moon/Sun system.
3.E.2 Compare the structures of the Earth’s surface using models or three-dimensional diagrams.
4.E.1 Explain the causes of day and night and phases of the moon.

Students brought home instructions for at at home alien project on Monday. They will conduct their writing and research components at school, but may do additional work at home if they desire. Aliens who can survive on their planet are due at school Wednesday, November 1. word-alien
