By In News & Updates On January 9, 2024

Be on the Lookout…

  • There is a packed Tuesday folder this week! Please help your child review skills they struggled with and celebrate areas of success!
  • Students dismiss 3 hours early today due to expected inclement weather. Stay safe!
  •  Today you are finally getting field trip information! Please mark your calendar for Tuesday April 9th. We will be visiting the Museum of Natural Science and Museum of History in downtown Raleigh. The best  part (other than getting 2 museums in 1 trip, is that the cost is only $6!). Please send payments and permission forms in ASAP. If you would like to be a chaperone (we will need many), please send Mrs. Vaughan a message in Talking Points stating so. word-fieldtrip
  • There is NO SCHOOL Monday, January 15th for the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday.
  • There is NO SCHOOL for students Wednesday, January 24th for a Teacher Workday.

This week in Literacy:

In Unit 3 of our Frogs Module, students will focus on becoming good researchers by reading and rereading to find answers to questions. We will work on locating and using a variety of text features, then use new found knowledge to eventually create a research piece and Freaky Frog trading card!

Our class started a read aloud this week of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing but Judy Blume. If your child has their own copy of this story or wants to get one, they are welcome to bring them in!

This week in Math:

Timed multiplication quizzes begin NEXT week!! Your child will have an icecream sundae sheet in their agenda to keep track of their successes with these 1 minute timed quizzes. There are 16 questions on each quiz and students pass with a 15/16 or better. If they do NOT pass, there will be a makeup opportunity each Friday during arrival. All quizzes will come home the day they are taken and will be located inside the plastic X sundae page. Please do what you can to help prepare your child for these fun and important assessments!

Students will be working with geometry vocabulary and concepts over these next 2 weeks. This topic is fun but vocabulary is KEY to understanding. For this reason, students will keep a geometry cheat sheet inside their agendas.

This week in science: plants

3.L.2 Understand how plants survive in their environments. 3.L.2.1 Remember the function of the following plant structures as it relates to the survival of plants in their environments:

  • Roots – absorb nutrients
  • Stems – provide support
  • Leaves – synthesize food
  • Flowers – attract pollinators and produce seeds for reproduction.

3.L2.2 Explain how environmental conditions determine how well plants survive and grow. 3.L.2.3 Summarize the distinct stages of the life cycle of seed plants. 3.L.2.4 Explain how the basic properties (texture and capacity to hold water) and components (sand, clay and humus) of soil determine the ability of soil to support the growth and survival of many plants.
