Be on the Lookout for…
- Wed, Feb 17th is National Random Acts of Kindness Day. I would like to celebrate this in the classroom as a way to celebrate being back together. Children are encouraged to write, bring, or make something kind for their classmates to share that afternoon. An easy way to do this is sending Valentines since we will not be in school on the 14th. This is not required, but I know our kids could use some “normal” and something to look forward to. If you are sending something edible, please just make sure it is store bought:) Note- these items will need to quarantine in our classroom Wed-Fri before touching and bringing home.
- Thurs Feb 18th students will take the NCCheckIns for math. This is not part of their grade but does give good data on how your child is doing on math standards covered since the beginning of this school year. These will be done online so all children will need to bring their device to school with them. More info to come on this next week!
- When your child comes back, they should bring ANY/ALL learning materials used in Jan/Feb back to school. The whiteboard/marker can remain at home for asynchronous days. They should also bring a their device, a DAILY snack, refillable water bottle, and a spare mask (in case the first gets wet, dirty, lost).
This week in Literacy:
In writing, students will turn their country research Google Slide (due last week) into a recorded Flipgrid to showcase their knowledge of the country they chose to research. We will share these in person Fri Feb 19th at our class International Festival. Here is a copy of the template students used to create their project.
Last week we read “Paul Bunyan” this week and will explore the tales of John Henry, Pecos Bill, Annie Oakley, and other legends from tall tales. We will continue to focus on character traits. We are able to make lots of connections with our last story, and focusing again on characters, theme, and even figurative language. word-tall tale
This week in Math:
Students are beginning a lengthy, but exciting Fractions unit. Lots of vocab is important in understanding this concept. Here is a parent guide for helping you and your student understand our main learning outcomes
Current vocab: numerator, denominator, unit fraction, partition, number line, visual model
TIMED MULTIPLICATION QUIZZES: will continue this week with 4’s. We have previously done 1’s and 2’s. The expectation now is that student complete a 16 question quiz with 15/16 or better accuracy within 90 seconds. This will be done paper and pencil version Friday morning. Students will prepare for this by practicing throughout the week using activities from their math board.
This week in Science/Social Studies:
- 3.H.1 Understand how events, individuals and ideas have influenced the history of local and regional communities.
- 3.H.2 Use historical thinking skills to understand the context of events, people and places.
- 3.C.1 Understand how diverse cultures are visible in local and regional communities.
