Be on the Lookout for…
- 3rd grade students will take the Beginning of Grade (BOG) assessment today. This is a reading test which shows what students already know, sets a benchmark to measure growth against this year, and serves as a Read to Achieve exemption if students score high enough. To learn more about Read to Achieve, please see the white handout in the Tuesday folders this week. word-BOG
- Today students had a short discussion about the events and legacy of 9/11. We kept it big picture and focused on how people stepped up as heroes on that day. You will get a short reading passage on this topic tonight for homework if you care to check in or chat with your child further. Another good resource for helping your child understand this day on a 3rd grade level can be found here on BrainPop. Our school log in info is: Oakview2 Password : bpop
- Our first of 4 Scholastic Book Orders is coming home last week. This is an awesome way to get your child motivated to read, and ordering online earns free books for our classroom! Please consider looking through the pages with your child. Just click this link here for easy ordering! Our class code is: GPPF6 and the deadline is Wed, Sept 12 by 4:00 pm. Thanks!
- This teacher is from Wilmington and has ridden out over a dozen hurricanes, but I have to admit that I’m a little shook by this one. My immediate family is being evacuated today from Wilmington and Topsail Beach today. I know it is on my mind and imagine it is in the forefront of student brains as well. We addressed the elephant in the room yesterday, and I will continue to allow thoughts or questions to be presented to alleviate any stress or anxiety. My thoughts are with all of you and I will continue to keep you posted on any changes or developments as I become aware.
This week in Literacy:
- We started weekly reading/activity buddies with Ms. Liberto’s 1st grade class on Fridays. I can’t wait to watch our “mature” 3rd graders serve as a mentor to these young owls and maybe even learn something! IF your child does not have a reading tote yet- please send asap!! Students need this for traveling around the school with their reading choices.
- Students are continuing literacy assessments this week in the areas of fluency, comprehension and context clues. These will help give us an idea of what students know and give us a baseline on how far students will grow this year.
- We are also learning about characters- their traits and motivation, and how their actions impact the story. Students will practice telling basic story elements and answering right there questions.
- In writing, we are having a great time writing a personal narrative about an injury we have had. The more details, the better the story!
This week in Math:
We are continuing to connect repeated addition and patterns to open our minds to multiplication and division concepts. Memorization of facts is not the goal (YET…) rather, I want to ensure students know when and WHY multiplication should be used. There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.
A year long “Scope and Sequence” which lays out our math curriculum pacing for the year can be found here
