Weekly Update 8.28.18

By In News & Updates On August 28, 2018

Welcome to Mrs. Vaughan’s 3rd grade class. I am so excited for a new year and hope you are ready to hit the ground running! Please check this site EVERY Tuesday afternoon. I will send the link through Dojo once a week as a reminder. It will have important dates, needs, and academic topics we are currently covering. There will also be a secret word embedded in the update. If you write the word at the bottom of your students’ agenda, they earn an extra dojo point each Wednesday morning!

What you need to know this week:

  • Tuesday folders will come home today.  Look forward to some papers from me and student samples NEXT week!
  • If you haven’t already, please read through the folder given to you a Meet and Greet last week. Return BYOD permission, white locator cards, and other papers as needed.
  • Be sure to sign up for Class Dojo using your student’s code so you can communicate easily and track their behavior each day. We would love for you to follow us on Twitter as well so you can see and share all the amazing things happening in our room! No pressure, I know not everyone is a “Twitterer”, haha. Word- dojo
  • Please fill out the parent questionnaire form ASAP. I am still waiting for a few.
  • Some student homework will require the internet at home for access to Google Classroom assignments. If you do not have reliable internet and/or a device for your child to use Google Docs, Forms, Slides, and Classroom with, please let me know right away. I will do my best to ensure they find time within the day at school to work on these tasks.
  • In case you were wondering what our Specials this year are all about:
    • Art (Ms. Meulink), Music (Ms. Huddle), and PE (Ms. Martin) will also be the first part of our 6 day rotation. We will also have 3 new specials for 3rd graders…
    • Explorers is with the IRT (Instructional resource Teacher) Ms. Hendrickson, with occasional lessons with the AIG teacher Ms. Holland. They do a lot of outside the box tasks that allow students to apply insightful thinking and work in teams to solve problems.
    • Yoga/Earth Day Every Day will be an alternating special taught by our own TA experts in that field Ms. Laxton and Ms. Simon.
    • STEAM- stands with Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Students will work with Ms. Austin to apply these skills to team project with include the 4C’s essential for learning (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity).

This week in literacy: A good deal of our first weeks will be spent going over procedures and learning routines. Students will learn new expectations and how Daily 5 reading looks in 3rd grade. I will be gathering a good deal of baseline data as well. We will also be covering the structure of our writing block.

This week in math: We are starting with multiplication from the get go in Unit 1! A letter to parents explaining this unit in detail is here. Students will learn to look for patterns and understand multiplication as repeated groups. The 4 strategies we will use to teach this are: Equal groups (picture models), Number Line, Arrays, and Skip Counting.

VOCAB: Equation, product, Equal groups, Number Line, Arrays, and Skip Counting.

A wonderful guide to our entire math pacing and goals can be found here 🙂
