By In News & Updates On November 27, 2018

Be on the Lookout for…

  • Students will not have Tuesday folders this week. Please look for a full folder next week.
  • PTA Spirit Night at Tijuana Flats Wednesday, Nov 28th. Present this flyer, PTA Movie Night Friday, Nov 30th at 6:00.
  • Students will have a treat this Thurs, Nov 29th! We will have a visit from Birdman Dave from 10:30-11:30. This will adjust our lunch time and recess time. We will eat lunch that day at 12:45-1:15 and will plan to have recess right after until specials.
  • Did you know NASA successfully landed a rover of Mars yesterday? We do! We watched a live feed of the action and discussed how challenging it would be to have everything go perfectly. It will be so cool to watch what the InSight Lander can capture! word-NASA
  • If you are interested in helping out or especially organizing a fun event for the class on Thursday, December 21st please let me know 🙂 I have already heard from a few of you via dojo and will send a more comprehensive note to those people in the next couple of weeks.

This week in Literacy:

Students are finishing the chapter book, The Year of Miss Agnes. We will identify character traits and how these impact story events. We will also explore the tricky concept of THEME in stories. This means the central message, or what the author wants us to take away from the story.  Students have learned a lot about the Allakaket Alaskan region already and will continue to apply their knowledge in reading and social studies these next few weeks. Check out this awesome map which shows the actual locations mentioned in the story, and photos which display some of the topics covered in this book.

Students are beginning a new writing piece this week based on the book “The Best Part of Me“. This book is written by a local author and teacher! Students will focus on something special about their body that makes them strong, beautiful, or unique. Students will create a special final piece that will be frameworthy 🙂

This week in Math:

Students are continuing to work with multiplication and division strategies for the next several weeks. They are now expected to learn specific facts and practice with the goal of fact fluency. We are reviewing the strategies used in multiplication (Number line, repeated addition, skip counting, arrays, and equal groups drawings) and will also cover unknowns and the PROPERTIES for multiplication (commutative, distributive, and associative). We will continue to solve MULTI STEP addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through number lines, arrays, visual models, and more!  Multiplication/division will be the MAJOR focus on 2nd quarter. Memorization of facts is an expectation come January when students begin their timed quizzes! May as well start prepping now! There are tons of great resources for this skill- please check some out here in this amazing math review resource organized by skill.

This quarter in Science:

3.L.1 Understand human body systems and how they are essential for life: protection, movement, and support.
3.L.1.1 Compare the difference functions of the skeletal and muscular systems.
3.L.1.2 Explain why skin is necessary for protection and for the body to remain healthy.
